Puntaroo is a live, subscription web platform that publishes algorithmic predictions for every thoroughbred race run in Australia - and validates each pick against real-time Betfair market odds. I designed and built the whole thing end to end.
The challenge
Punters are rightly sceptical of paid tipsters. The site had to earn trust on the first visit: prove a transparent, publicly auditable track record, give real value for free, and only then ask for a subscription - all in a fast, polished experience that works on a phone at the track.
What I did
- Designed a clean, dark "digital paddock" interface with a clear free-vs-Pro story, so visitors can see yesterday's results and a 30-day track record before paying anything.
- Built the front end in React + TypeScript (Vite), with date-aware access rules - past results stay public while today's picks are Pro-only.
- Wired up Stripe subscriptions with Firebase Auth and Firestore, enforcing the paywall server-side with security rules, not just in the UI.
- Connected a data pipeline (Cloud Functions + BigQuery) and the live Betfair API to compare every pick against the real market in real time.
The result
- A production platform live at puntaroo.com.au, processing every Australian race, every day.
- Transparent, publicly auditable results that build trust before the ask.
- Subscriptions, authentication, data and hosting all running on Google Cloud - built and maintained solo.
